John ter Haak's love affair with the sea started 65 years ago when he grew up as youngest son in his fathers port and stevedoring company Piet ter Haak and sons NV now called Ter Haak Group. At that time he built and raced power boats initially for a hobby and later professionally, winning many National and International Power boat Championships.
Because of his powerboat racing experience he was invited to make and perform the stunts like the famous speedboat chase in the Amsterdam canals for the film "Puppet on a Chain". His international success brought him in contact with Colin Chapman of Lotus Cars and he began importing Lotus and TVR cars for a specialized Dutch and International market.
At that time he introduced Budget Rent a Car from America into Europe, to whom he also sold many hundreds of tax free cars (West Side Cars) together with the ter Haak harbour Company, like Mercedes, Bentley, Rollsen, Ferrari, Lotus, MG, and many Volkswagens, the so called "one dollar a day" car with Budget a Car. This soon extended to Boats and again he was back in the construction of Motoryachts, together again with Colin Chapman of JCL Marine. This time with a world wide range of Motor yachts like Marauder, Mystere, Mamba and the famous Moonraker.
As a pioneer with Frans Heesen with the Dutch Heesen Shipyard in Oss Holland he was responsible for sales and construction of a large number of 60/120 feet fast aluminium motoryachts culminating Dutch high quality hulled poweryachts for several Arabian Sheikhs and International yacht clients. A famous demonstration was with the Emir of Kuwait during seatrials at the Persian Gulf with a 90 ft Heesen semi costum patroule vessel. Several where sold and delivered to the family of sheikh Al-Sabah
Later, he worked with the Hakvoort Shipyard in Monnickendam Holland to introduce and build many of the famous"Striker Sport Fisherman" series.
A favourite ship was the "Charlotte Rhodes" a 130 feet three mast top sail schooner built in 1903 in Denmark. He owned this famous ship and did some extensive renovation on her before chartering her to the BBC for the famous TV-series "The Onedin Line".
After this he sold and managed the construction of several motoryachts like the "Luisamar five" a 143 feet aluminium twin waterjet "Ter Haak PB 143", built at the van Mill yard together with "Ter Haak Marine"now a subsidiary of the Ter Haak Group, this Pieter Beeldsnijder designed superyacht is now named "Star Ship" One of the best charter yachts available.
He continued for many years to be a dealer and distributor for English yachts like Sunseeker, sold and delivered over 400, new and second-hand motoryachts throughout the world.
John ter Haak together with his Joyce and sons Frank and Robert with their Dutch sales and service group during the many International Sunseeker boat shows they organized. Representing Dutch Boat yards with new construction and Re-Fit, International brokerage, import & export, total yacht service for registration, yacht charter, insurance, moorings, delivery & transport service, but always-----marketing sales and construction of quality super yachts.
